Music at village core:
The Għaxaq Music Festival
August, 2019 marked the 20th anniversary from the launching of the very first music festival held in Ħal Għaxaq.
Making great music of international repute accessible to a wider, more diverse audience
The concept was startingly innovative in its simplicity. The idea was that of making good music of international repute accessible to a wider, more diverse audience by locating somewhat large festival events bang on in the unsuspecting village core. This in sharp contrast to music events or festivals generally associated with specific venues or arenas.
The concept held another fascinating variable in researching and tapping into the European music market’s foreign groups or performers whilst combining them with maltese artists riding high on the local music scene.
This recipe of linking high quality music tribute bands or performers, exclusively presented off the beaten track venues proved to be hugely successful, winning wide public acclaim. Thus, good popular music was made available to our multi diverse communities making it accessible in the immediate here-and-now.
But this was not only a community phenomenon. Its clever promotional marketing created a positive ripple effect within our tourist market by alluring tourists targeting to combine attendance to a good music summer event whilst exploring novel tourist attractions such as roaming the quaint village core with its majestic baroque parish church.
In synthesis, evolved in a community project based on the same criteria. A music festival spread over 2 days with a day dedicated to a maltese artist or group and a second day with yet another high-quality live international artist/band. A music event held within the setting of Ħal Għaxaq all dressed up for the approaching village feast.
This is an important factor in this project, since not only there is the intention of creating a performing platform from which Maltese and foreign performers can interact with a vast public, but the crowd is meant to partake of a collective experience or better a sense of coming together of a community at large. Strong emphasis is being made in promoting and presenting this event as the ultimate community experience, where various walks of life meet. It’s an event that is built on a strong sense of fraternity through music, where the aim is make cultures meet in a small Maltese village.
